There is a new trend in the labour market that is called "future of jobs" where the soft skills seems to need more development versus the traditional hard skills.

soft skills

First of all, I asked myself, What is a soft skill? Do I have any?

Wikipedia defines soft skills as "a combination of people skills, social skills, communication skills, character of personality traits, attitudes, career attributes, social intelligence and emotional intelligence quotients".

Clear right? I am pretty sure that you have identified yourself with many of them. If not , do you have a chance to develop some of them? The answer will really just depend on your attitudes.

But I wonder, Why I was learning hard skills only? Is all the education system doing it wrong?

I have studied accounting, marketing, statics, sales, human resources, finance, law in the University. Then I got a master degree and studied investments, finance, real estate, commodities, hedge funds. Then I got a second master and I have studied accounting, taxes, legal, financial analysis. And then, one morning , I arrived at a new job and I cannot apply almost anything that I have learned. Guess what, you start to develop your #softskills.

What are the main soft skills for the next years?

Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Drones, Biotech, Eco, Smart Cities - everything is changing so fast and are we ready to be out there with our soft skills or do we need again hard skills to recycle our self and survive in the next wave of future jobs?

Let's start with ourself and our soft skills. They have an unlimited upside of development, no cap, not risk of failure and fun challenge to participate in.

#Socialskills: Help, collaborate, respect, resolving conflict, appropriate behaviour with others.

To develop social skills , it's important to be conscious, an active listener, emphatic and precise in our verbal and non verbal communications. Some advantages:

  • More relationships: you will became more charismatic, a desirable trait. The relationships will help you to get a job, get promoted and make new relationships.

  • Communication: Naturally you will enrich your communications skills.

  • Happiness: You will boost your self-esteem, mental health and you will reduce your stress and anxiety.

#Emotionalintelligence: "The ability to perceive emotions, to access and generate emotions so as assist thought, to understand emotions, emotional knowledge, and to reflectively regulate emotions so as to promote emotional intellectual growth" Mayer & Salovey.

These powerful words are explain in more detail by Daniel Goldeman and his five components of emotional intelligence:

  • Self-awareness: Identified our own emotions.

  • Internal motivation: The flow that comes with being immersed in an activity.

  • Self-regulation: Control and redirect disruptive impulses and moods.

  • Empathy: Understand other people mood, thoughts or behaviours.

  • Social skills: proficiency in managing relationships.

#Designthinking: An innovative way of think to solve problems, create new products, needs, understand people behaviours through a method of five phases.

  • Inspiration: Understand the problem or the opportunity

  • Empathy: Understand people needs and want.

  • Ideation: Generare the idea. Brainstorming, think out of the box, frameworks, tell more stories, communicate.

  • Implementation: Turn idea in something concrete.

  • Prototyping: Turn idea into a product, service, problem solving...
